After finishing his morning run, Mat Moore takes a quick shower, changes, kisses his wife and children goodbye, and heads to Physical Edge to greet his first patient at 7 a.m. He is working late tonight with two other therapists to take a local group through functional movement screens to avoid injury and improve their core strength, stability and athletic performance.
Meanwhile, Darby Cassell has just ended her 6 a.m. boot camp class that she teaches each week at Physical Edge. She is showering and mingling with members in the locker room as she gets ready for her day.
At 11 a.m., after seeing patients every 30 minutes since 7 a.m., Bud Cassell picks
up lunch for him and Darby to enjoy back at the office. He ends a little early so he has time to put on his swimsuit and meet his next patient in the facility’s warm water pool.
And, after a day at work, Marianne Moore returns to Physical Edge with her children. The kids are excited to see their friends in the child care facility while Marianne enjoys time with her friends in the weekly kickboxing class.
This is just a small glimpse into an average day for the owners of Physical Edge, a rehabilitation and fitness center. The facility is owned and operated by four partners, Bud and Darby Cassell, and Mathew and Marianne Moore.
The couples came together in 2003 with a vision about the kind of clinic and care they wanted to provide in the Davis area. Now six years later, the facility is serving the community as the partners had hoped.
“At Physical Edge, it is our goal to improve the quality of life for the patients and fitness members we serve,” physical therapist Mat Moore says earnestly. “We do this by providing the highest standard of clinical care. We have such an incredibly talented team of professionals at our facility … from our therapists and trainers to our helpful, customer-centered support staff.”
Aside from specializing in rehabilitation in orthopedics, neurological disorders, spine, pediatrics, hand, aquatic and Pilates therapy, the facility is a fitness center and Pilates studio. The facility offers personal training, back training classes, functional movement screens, and group exercise classes in the pool and multipurpose, room as well as many other services.
Darby Cassell believes one of the reasons Physical Edge has been so successful is because “all four partners complement each other so well. We work so well together and can play off of each other’s strengths.”
Marianne Moore adds, “Although we are with each other each day, we still meet every two weeks over lunch to discuss business matters. It has been a great way to address larger items but also to connect on a lighter side with each other.”
Bud, Mat and four other therapists treat patients daily, while Darby and Marianne take care of the day-to-day operations. Darby works closely with the front office, accounts payable and receivable, and teaches fitness classes. Marianne focuses on the human resources, marketing and programming.
“We are immersed in the business. It is challenging not to take work home … and rarely does it happen,” says Bud, a physical therapist, “but we are lucky to have partners to rely on. We know that the Moores or the Cassells can take time off throughout the year and truly be able leave the business behind in good hands.”
Advice that Darby would offer to people seeking to enter business with partners is “to be sure you find people you get along with and have the same goals and values that you do. It is essential for a successful, lasting business.”
